The river Fowey is a true Moorland river, rising near Brown Willy, the highest point in Cornwall.

It flows for 30 miles to the sea at Fowey and is little influenced by agricultural or industrial activity.

Characteristically gin clear, it provides a real challenge to the fly fisherman.

Sea Trout

The Fowey has long enjoyed a reputation as one of the best sea trout rivers in the U.K.

The recently commissioned fish counter at Restormel recorded over 7000 fish last year in addition to the 1500 salmon.

WAINSFORD is positioned 5-miles from the tide, and is a favourite holding reach for fish fresh from the sea, given reasonable water volume.

Large sea trout enter the river early, from late March. These are a real prize, averaging well over 3lb, with the occasional double figure fish. They move up river quite quickly in groups of 6-12 fish. For a limited period they can be caught in daylight hours on conventional fly or spinning tackle. Once settled in freshwater however, they are best tackled by fly at night.

Summer peal, fish from 12oz to 2lb, arrive in large numbers around the middle of June, and populate the pools in increasing numbers until the end of the season September 30th. They take the fly readily at night and offer superb sport.

We had 371 sea trout at Wainsford in 2001.
